Your journey is powered by a reliable 4WD vehicle (Toyota Fortuner or similar), allowing the freedom to traverse remote regions, historic villages, and pristine coastal roads at your own pace. You’ll explore centuries-old forts and souqs, swim in hidden wadis, camp beneath the stars in untouched wilderness, and witness wildlife in its natural habitat — all while enjoying thoughtfully selected accommodations, local hospitality, and the independence of the open road.
This curated route includes a balance of comfort and adventure: from charming inns and desert camps to rugged wild camping with fully equipped gear. On arrival at Muscat International Airport, you'll be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Take some time to relax after your journey. Your 4WD Land Cruiser (or similar vehicle) will be delivered to your hotel in the evening or the following morning. This day is perfect for adjusting to the local environment, soaking in the coastal vibe of Muscat, and preparing for the adventure ahead. Overnight: Ramada Encore Muscat. Meals: Breakfast.
Begin your journey with a guided half-day city tour of Muscat, blending modern elegance and historical charm. Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque — a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture. Explore Bait Zubair Museum for cultural insight, followed by photo stops at Al-Alam Palace, and the twin Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali. Conclude the tour by wandering through the bustling lanes of Muttrah Souq, famous for its frankincense, silver, and spices. Overnight: Ramada Encore Muscat Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, drive toward the lush village of Barkat Al Mauz, nestled amidst date palm plantations. Continue your scenic ascent to Jabal Akhdar, the "Green Mountain," situated 2000 meters above sea level. Explore Wadi Bani Habib, renowned for its abandoned mud villages and pomegranate orchards. This morning, venture to Jebel Shams, the highest peak in Oman, offering sweeping views over the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Visit the charming village of Misfat Al Abriyyin, with its stone houses and falaj irrigation systems. Stop at Al Hamra to witness centuries-old mud houses. Continue to Bahla to explore its immense UNESCO-listed fort and later visit Jabreen Castle, known for its intricate ceilings and historic interiors. Overnight: Ihyaa Inn Nizwa Meals: Breakfast
Depart Nizwa after breakfast and head towards the emerald pools of Wadi Bani Khalid. This picturesque oasis is surrounded by palm trees and desert mountains — ideal for a refreshing dip. Later, enter Wahiba Sands and enjoy an exhilarating drive across rolling sand dunes. Marvel at the sunset from the dunes before settling into your desert camp. After breakfast, drive to Sur, a city renowned for its dhow-building heritage. Visit a traditional dhow factory and the old coastal neighborhood of Ajyah. Continue to Ras Al Jinz. After dinner at the eco-lodge, participate in a guided turtle-watching experience at the turtle reserve — a sanctuary for endangered green turtles. Today’s route follows the beautiful coastline. Stop at Al Ashkharah, a scenic fishing village, before continuing south toward the remote beaches of Khaluf. Enjoy a night of wild camping on the powdery white sands under a sky full of stars. Overnight: Wild Camping Meals: None
Continue along the untamed Omani coast, passing Ras Madrakah and its black rock-strewn beaches. Travel through fishing villages and secluded coves before reaching Wadi Shwaymiah, a limestone canyon with striking cliffs and a tranquil wadi. Leave the coast behind as you journey inland to the legendary Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter — the largest continuous sand desert in the world. Drive past dramatic desertscapes, and set up camp among towering dunes that stretch endlessly to the horizon. Overnight: Wild Camping Meals: None
Spend a full day immersed in the vastness of the Rub Al Khali. Explore the hauntingly beautiful sand dunes and experience the profound silence of one of Earth’s most remote locations. This is Bedouin territory, immortalized by explorer Wilfred Thesiger in his travels. Overnight: Wild Camping Meals: None
Drive toward Salalah via the Qara Mountains. En route, visit Taqah for a glimpse of its coastal charm and historic forts. Explore the ruins of Sumharam and stroll through Wadi Darbat’s verdant setting. Continue to Mughsail Beach and visit the nearby frankincense groves. Discover Salalah's rich heritage with a visit to the Museum of the Frankincense Land at the Al Balid Archaeological Park (UNESCO site). Visit the majestic Sultan Qaboos Mosque and browse for traditional goods at the Haffah Souq, known for frankincense and Dhofari crafts. Your self-drive vehicle will be collected this evening. Your Oman adventure includes a mix of hotel stays and camping. The journey begins with 2 nights at Ramada Encore Muscat (4), followed by 2 nights at Nizwa Heritage Inn (3), both with breakfast. Next, enjoy 1 night at Sama Al Wasil Camp (3) and 1 night at Sama Ras Al Jinz (3), each with breakfast and dinner. Then, spend 4 nights camping on your own in an Igloo Tent (no meals), and conclude with 2 nights at Sama Jabal Samhan (3) with breakfast and dinner.
